Imagine you’re swimming peacefully in the crystal-clear waters of the South Pacific, and suddenly a gigantic 25-ton humpback whale approaches you and starts nudging you with its head and flippers. 🐋💥
This happened to marine biologist Nan Hauser . At first, she thought the gigantic animal had gone crazy or wanted to play a bit violently.

Nan Hauser had been studying whales for 28 years, but in October 2017 she experienced something she had never seen before. While diving in the Cook Islands, a huge humpback whale veered off course and headed straight for her. 🇨🇰👁️

Humpback whales have an incredible protective instinct called altruistic behavior . They’re known to defend their own young, seals, and other animals from attacks by orcas and sharks. But this was the first time in history that a whale was filmed doing the same for a human! 🤯🎥
Even as the whale was pushing Nan towards the boat, a second whale positioned itself behind it and slapped the water with its tail, completely scaring the shark away. 🌊💥

Thanks to the final push from her enormous “bodyguard”, Nan managed to reach the ladder of her boat and climb aboard safely.
As she sat on the deck, her heart racing, the whale surfaced right next to the boat, spouted a jet of water from its blowhole, and stared at her for a few seconds before returning to the depths. It was as if it were making sure its human was safe! 🐋👋
