(Don’t) Shut Your Mouth! Mouth Taping May Not Work As Well As You Thought

Mouth taping has become a trendy wellness hack in recent years, with many claiming it can improve sleep quality and promote better nasal breathing. The idea is that by taping the mouth shut, you’re encouraged to breathe through your nose, which can purportedly lead to better oxygen intake and more restful sleep. However, experts caution that mouth taping might not be as effective as some believe, and it may even cause issues for certain individuals.

For starters, those with nasal congestion or breathing problems could find themselves struggling to breathe at night, making the tape more of a hindrance than a help. Some health professionals also warn that restricting airflow while sleeping could potentially lead to anxiety, panic, or discomfort. People with sleep apnea or other sleep disorders are advised to avoid the practice, as it could worsen symptoms or disrupt their breathing patterns.

While proponents of mouth taping argue that it can improve skin hydration by preventing dry mouth, there’s little scientific evidence to back up many of the claims. Additionally, taping the mouth shut could be a safety risk if the tape is not removed properly, or if the person is unable to breathe effectively through their nose.

It’s important to recognize that while nasal breathing has its benefits, mouth taping might not be a one-size-fits-all solution. Before trying it out, it’s a good idea to consult a healthcare professional to ensure that it’s a safe and suitable practice for your individual needs.
