Do you have white spots on your nails? Find out why.

Do you have white spots on your nails? Below, I’ll be talking about the possible causes of these; so keep reading if you’re interested in this topic.

If you notice small white spots on your fingernails or toenails, you may have a condition called leukonychia. The name might alarm you, making you think it’s something serious, but it’s generally not a serious condition.

These spots usually develop as a result of mild to moderate trauma to the nail. Sometimes this injury occurs weeks before the whitish spot appears, since nails grow slowly. Generally, leukonychia does not require treatment and usually disappears over time as the nail grows out. These spots will not appear unless the nail is traumatized again.

However, this only applies when just one or a few nails are affected. If all your nails have white spots or streaks, then you could be suffering from a more serious condition, such as cirrhosis, anemia, diabetes, or kidney or heart disease.

Another possible cause is that the stains are the result of a mild infection or allergy; or a side effect of medication. Also, the use of detergents and other harsh substances can weaken the nails.
